here comes the sun
Manila, 4 March—I have a theory that January takes forever to start—we are all still shrouded with the post-holiday haze, hence it takes a bit longer for anything to take off: Work, school, business. Perhaps we do actually spend the first 15 days of January acclimatizing to the new year, and maybe that's why January feels like it's 45 days long.
February, however, is an entirely different story: tldr Less days, more work! Everybody's engines already up and running! Truth be told, February got me all wheezy. So many things happened, all in 28 days. And before we could even recover: March na! Which means, for many: The end of Q1 is nigh haha.
I've been noticing hotter than usual weather—truth be told, I'm a bit excited about summer. And I mean, why not? These clouds, those skies, the beach? I love this season.
Anyway, this email is late because I watched:
Oo, I watched it for the Mocha dragging scene.
True story: I got asked, So sino ka sa apat na Sisters? and I was like, What?
So I had to watch that so I could answer this properly, so here goes: For the record, I'm probably a mix of all sisters: Type A like Gabbie, panganay like Teddie, bossy like Bobbie, and black sheep like Alex LOL. Tawang-tawa ako na kinailangan ko talaga siyang panoorin para masagot 'to nang maayos, and I'm five years late to this party, but OKAY.
PS Before watching the actual film, my sole exposure to this movie is through this Davao conyo dub. Which, btw, is already funny even before I actually watched the movie. Amazing.
Also dito pala sa movie na 'to galing ang GIF na 'to. Wow I learned so many things.
Anyway, medyo serious:
In case you missed it: I wrote about Junior Inquirer's last print issue over at Medium: How to save what we love:
While I mourn for JI’s could-have-beens, I feel a glimmer of hope still. After all, along with the announcement that this was their last print issue, JI also announced that they are moving JI online — perhaps to meet their audience best, and without the cost of printing on paper, too.I feel sad that it does seem like the advocacy of training youth journalists is being abandoned at such a crucial time — when the influx of deliberately falsified information being passed off as true and fact is at an all-time high, and critical thinking and expression are more important than ever.Still, I hope this is not the case. I hope that JI is merely shifting its goal from training print journalists to training multimedia journalists.
In life news: The Ledger is out!
The launch of The Ledger earlier this week was met with overwhelming interest, and that makes us so excited. Sign-ups for pre-orders are still on-going! :)
And one more thing:
This proof arrived last Monday.
True story: Cha's first study for this book cover was dark-colored, and my comment was, Para namang Demonics and Other Stories yung name ng collection. Let's save that idea for the next one haha.
For now, we have this: Old stories for old feelings. Charot. I compiled them to mark a decade or so since writing all these things, and now here they are.
