brief notes about endgame and winterfell
Manila, 5 May—How do weekends zip past us just like that? It remains a mystery. But here I am, back on a Sunday night, trying to gather thoughts before I embark on the new week ahead.
And since it’s been a week since the premiere of Avengers: Endgame, and the original airing of Game of Thrones’ latest episode, The Battle of Winterfell, I suppose it’s time to gather interesting things that have been said around the Internet about these two epic shows.
Massive spoilers from hereon. This is your warning.
Avengers: Endgame
Caught this on opening weekend, thanks to a company-sponsored block screening, and I enjoyed it immensely. Throughout the three-hour film I was just mostly engrossed and entertained, and I honestly did not feel the time that much.
A lot of moments made me go Oh wow—like that much applauded All Together Now scene (which felt like a That’s Entertainment Grand Reunion on Kuya Germs’ birthday), the whole Captain America x Mjölnir, that breathtaking Run with The Gauntlet scene with Spider-Man and all the girls, etc etc
These were scenes I shared with the rest of the room. There was one moment though that I literally felt my heart shoot up my throat: The reveal of Captain Marvel’s butch haircut because COME ON. Haha.
ANYWAY. Much has been said about what was good about it, how fitting an end it was to an era, etc. But I do have one nitpick: Thor. I think his depression and PTSD arc was mishandled and played for jokes (slapped in the middle of a panic attack, seriously?) Could have been done better.
Speaking of things that could have been done better:
The Battle of Winterfell
Had this episode not coincided with Endgame, I’m sure there would have been clamor to show it in cinemas, seeing that it’s the show’s longest episode at more than 80 minutes.
That said, it was more than 80 minutes of hacking and killing and running in the dark, through the Winterfell castle, in the middle of biting cold, dragons be damned.
And yes, I think on the whole it was amazing. I was super happy to not have been spoiled all day regarding the episode’s biggest twist, which was Arya’s death blow to the Night King.
As a fan of Arya’s character development through the seasons, it was hard not to tear up at this moment: Homegirl was literally blind for weeks, and was chased by her murderous officemate through town while nursing a stab wound in the gut. I mean.
Here’s that moment set to Celine Dion, because why not.
I enjoyed reading Ruey’s Battle of Winterfell recap over at Inquirer Super today. I have also been enjoying military analysis-type of articles dissecting what went wrong at the Battle of Winterfell (RIP Dothraki horde). Even the Washington Post had one. I still think Jon is a shitty strategist and field commander (hello Battle of the Bastards) but an excellent fighter, which is the only explanation as to why he’s still alive.
I felt vindicated about the dead coming to life in the crypts because we literally told you so! The Mormonts dying in battle made me emotional af, but Jorah mumbling a mere, I’m hurt at his dying moments in Dany’s arms? Shouldn’t have been funny, but was. #BIGMOOD
Also, this is the most excellent Game of Thrones/Battle of Winterfell meme that we found on the internet today.
Kung kalaro ko ‘tong si Bran, irereport ko siya hahahaha. Theon should have also been here as a Marksman, pero lima lang kasi nga pala.
Speaking of memes: This video of Thanos dancing to BLACKPINK has forever scarred me. It should scar you, too.
xo,
